12th Street EM Model Project
East 12th Street, between Avenue A & Bin the East Village part of the Lower East Side of Manhattan
New York, NY
The 12th Street EM Model Project is an on-going community development activity, which began at the end of 2009, by volunteers to recycle food waste and other organic waste (autumn leaves, garden clippings) by the bokashi method. The food waste and organic waste from the neighborhood are converted into soil amendments at the community gardens (El Sol Brillante Community Garden, the Children's Garden, and the Campos Garden). Their future goal is to eventually develop a food-waste-to-food-growing community, involving the gardens, roof-tops, local schools and restaurants, as well as, a community center for educational and training purposes.
They also give tours and demonstrations of their EM Bokashi system. Their regular volunteer activity occurs every Thursday 9 am - 12 pm at the Children's Garden (southwest corner of 12th St and Ave B) and/or at the El Sol Brillante community garden (middle of the block, south side of 12th St between Ave A & B).
